Historic and Cultural Tibet - Map
When you travel to Tibet it is important to realize that the country that we usually call Tibet is not the same as the current Autonomous Region in China, which covers only half of cultural Tibet. This map explains the situation:
What do the colours mean?- The yellow area is the Tibet Autonomous Region.
- The yellow, orange and red parts are claimed to be Tibetan by exile groups.
- The orange, yellow, green and turquoise are Tibetan areas designated by China.
- The blue area is historically within Tibetan cultural sphere.
- The small green area in the northwest is claimed by India.
- The turquoise area is claimed by China as part of the Autonomous Region.
