Tibet News - What's Going On?

This page features a Tibet news feed from the BBC. Maybe you wonder why this site does not feature news from a Tibetan newspaper or TV channel. The reason is simple, yet disturbing. Chinese media are censoring news from Tibet and they have been doing so ever since the Chinese occupation started in the 1950s.

The Internet hasn't changed this. Yahoo has a news feed with Chinese and Tibetan news, but it follows the line of the Communist Party. Many blogs on Tibet are propaganda tools for China and some time ago the authorities even shut down YouTube.

Yet, despite all this, there is still a free flow of Tibetan news that is independent from China. Many of the reports reach us thanks to the Tibetans outside China and their connections in the country, and it's obvious the Dalai Lama plays a prominent role in this. These independent reports are picked up by Western media such as the BBC.
