Tibet Tourism Facts
Tibet tourism is different than anywhere else. First of course, there is the altitude, which brings so much cool and thin air to the country. Next, Tibet has tremendous hospitality, as well as a religiously pious atmosphere.
There are many ways to enter the country. Many will come by air and arrive at Lhasa airport. But there are alternatives. For example, you may take the Qinghai-Tibetan Railway. As the train climbs, you will be able to enjoy the amazing scenery as you acclimate yourself to higher and higher altitude. The train, which runs all the way from Shanghai and Beijing, has two different oxygen supply systems to make sure you can breathe without difficulty. Or you may decide to enter Tibet by automobile. This means that you will take the Zhongni Highway which is considered the best highway to take to Tibet. It is usually free of avalanches in winter, and free of landslides in the warmer months. If you are flying into Lhasa Airport, when you land, you are already at 3,650 meters (11,975 ft) above sea level. As a comparison: - Paris 129m (423 ft)
- New york 234m (767 ft)
- London 24m (78 ft)
- Melbourne 132m (434 ft)
As you can see, Lhasa is the highest capital city in the world. If you are suffering and feeling unpleasant, rest and hydration is recommended, but in worse case scenarios, oxygen bottles are available in Lhasa to ease the symptoms. Flying into Tibet is not as difficult as the drive from Nepal. Nepal is in a valley, comparatively to the surrounding Himalayas, at 1400 meters (4,593 ft). Within a short period of leaving Nepal into Tibet along the steeply rising Friendship Highway, you will arrive at the Tong-La pass, which is at 5,120m (16,797 ft). If this is your first entry to Tibet, you will notice symptoms of altitude sickness. A lot of travelers retreat at this point and can become quite sick because of the rapid rise of almost 4000m. But when you get to the top of pass, the view is spectacular!
* Tingri
A small truck stop town of Tingri at 4,390m (14,402 ft) is where you can rest safely at a lower altitude to acclimatise and begin your journey on the roof of the world. Should you take the bus, it is said that you may find the trip uncomfortable since many are prone to altitude sickness and have smelly feet, however blending in with the warm peoples of Tibet will give you an experience you will not forget! Tibet tourism and tourist facilities do not meet Western standards, but that's not what you should be here for. Some of the places you should not miss include the Yarlong Tsangpo Canyon, the Ngari plateau and the Mount Everest. Yarlong Tsangpo Canyon, is breathtaking and houses extremely rare plants and animals. The area is dotted with tranquil lakes as well as clear running rivers.
